What is relapsed platinum-sensitive ovarian cancer?
If your ovarian cancer has relapsed at least 6 months after first treatment with
a platinum-containing chemotherapy regimen, then it is considered to be platinum-sensitive.
The initial chemotherapy regimen for ovarian cancer usually includes the combination
of platinum and taxane. Although 70 to 80 percent of women will achieve a complete
remission with this first-line chemotherapy, the majority will have a recurrence
of their ovarian cancer at some time in the future. Relapsed platinum-sensitive
ovarian cancer can be treated as a chronic disease, and some patients may experience
periods of relapse followed by periods of remission. The three major goals of care
for women with relapsed platinum-sensitive ovarian cancer are maintaining stable
disease, minimizing the side effects of treatment, and preserving a good quality
of life.
